Which do you prefer?

Alllllrighty, well here are 4 versions of a sketch I've been playing with in photoshop for a few years and just finished. Which version do you think is best?

BTW, I apologize for the anatomy...Yea. This was a few years back.

Also, I am still working on my "Lolita" piece and trying to figure out how to set up this blog. More to come very soon!

  1. I think three has the most potential for interesting reflective lighting, but some of it needs a little fixing. Like, I don't think his hand holding the umbrella would get any of that blue light, since I'd think it would be blocked by the umbrella. One thing is looking at umbrella pictures, the reflective lighting from them is very week, so to get any real nice warm reds on his face or skin, you might have to move the umbrella in closer. Here's a good little tutorial about gradients in lighting: http://d.facdn.net/art/damiem/1278105926.damiem_gradients2.jpg

  2. thanks! EEep, yea it wouldn't. Oh, not realizing things at four in the morning. It wasn't really reflective lighting, just more screwing around with photoshop and bringing more color throughout the piece and into his face. But it still might need more blending in if it looks awkward?

Oh, that's nice. Do you have his original site or more of his art? That's a nice tutorial.

  4. He used to have a blog but looks like it's down. Next best thing: http://nanya.deviantart.com/

I think you should try and push this piece to be as rendered as possible. It'd be a good lighting/rendering piece, and it's got a lot of potential to do some interesting things.

  7. I like 4, but my eye keeps going to the right where it is very clean vs the rest of the picture which is very sketchy and flow-y. Its like there is no background behind him.
I like his face and skin tone, though the more red shades disturb me. & His ribs are like whoa.

I also prefer the sunshine-through-the-clouds lighting that 3 has. Maybe you could put a ray in the background of 4 lighting up some rain or a bird or something.
